Q. What is Cares, www.cares.org.au ?

  • Cares is an interactive,  multi-faceted website offering a menu of risk management products and resources.
  • Cares is Australia’s first web-based risk management platform aimed specifically at the schooling, child care, nonprofit, religious, aged care, volunteering and community sector. The goal of the website is to assist employees and employers manage risk, avoid surprises and keep their organisations focused on community-serving missions.
  • Cares enables professionals working in organisations identify, evaluate and manage their exposures; develop customised risk management plans; review helpful materials and resources on various risk management topics; and complete online courses in several areas of interest.
  • Cares enables a broad range of Australian schooling, child care, nonprofit, religious, volunteering and community organisations to identify risks related to child and youth protection and to develop and employ risk control strategies based on current best practices to better protect children and youth receiving services from these organisations.

Q. What are the elements of the Cares website?

The elements of Cares include the following:

Courses for Supervisors, Professional and Other Staff Working in Nonprofit Organisations on the following topics:

      • Seven Principles of Youth Protection,
      • Screening Employees and Volunteers,
      • Responding to Abuse Allegations and Incidents,
      • Youth Protection Policies,
      • Principles of Youth Development, and
      • Bullying Awareness and Prevention.

In the future additional online training courses on various topics will be introduced as we receive user feedback.

This component contains several dozen informative factsheets on a wide range of youth protection topics, including interviewing prospective staff, application forms, disciplinary measures, programme design, safety education for parents and children, and more.

    • Downloadable Books - Two informative texts are available:
      • The Season of Hope: A Risk Management Guide for Child and Youth-Serving Nonprofits - This informative guide covers a wide range of issues, from youth development to child abuse prevention, and
      • More Than a Matter of Trust: Managing the Risks of Mentoring - If your nonprofit provides mentors this book contains helpful information on managing risks that emerge in mentoring programmes.
    • Web Links relating to risk management, child and youth protection, bullying, mentoring and other risk management topics.

My Risk Evaluator is a web-based risk management tool specifically designed for Australian schooling, child care, nonprofit, religious, aged care, volunteering and community organisations. The ten modules within My Risk Evaluator assist organisations in understanding the basic concepts of risk management, as well as provide help identifying risks.

The programme offers specific recommendations, checklists and templates to help your organisation manage critical risks.

 Q. How many courses are available through Cares?

At this time, six courses are available on child and youth protection topics. In the future, additional topics will be offered.

Q. Can I print the content featured in the Online Training?

You cannot print the content featured in the online courses. However, many of the subjects covered in the six current courses are addressed in other site resources, including the two books featured in the Resources section and the numerous factsheets available through the Best Practices Inventory.
